a helpful thought…

“Hope is not something to hold on to or let go of. It is an emergent thought that occurs your goal is on the foreseeable horizon and you know the next step it takes to get there.” – Jocelyn Townsend, 2020

‘Zero tolerance policies’ do not work. It is necessary to have some tolerance for the distress of discrimination when you are in a position of power in order to address it effectively. Tolerance is not synonymous with learned helplessness or excusing the behaviour. It is rooted in awareness and accountability. Tolerance is necessary to address a problem with reduced toxic shame. Toxic shame is what occurs when we downplay or deny a behaviour because we fear the consequences. When a society does not have some tolerance, toxic shame is empowered and with that denial thrives and social inequities continue.
